Reading: The Colony of Unrequited Dreams

Finished The Colony of Unrequited Dreams. As an introduction to the history of Newfoundland, it’s an excellent book. A novel that mixes a famous, historically significant character with a fictitious one is hard to pull off though and I don’t think the author did pull it off. It was a much better pseudo-history than it was a work of partial fiction. Also, throughout the book I kind of loathed Joey Smallwood, the main character. Was he that terrible to his family in real life? And he comes across as an extremely unlikely first Premier, someone who was at the right place at the right time more than anything.
